BUY CARS FROM COPART THE SMARTER WAY
Copart is one of the largest auto auctions in the country and a popular source for individuals looking to buy and sell vehicles for profit. Whether you are interested in salvage title vehicles, clean title vehicles, repossessions, insurance vehicles, motorcycles, trucks, SUVs, or specialty vehicles, Copart offers a tremendous amount of inventory.
For people interested in flipping cars, the biggest challenge is gaining access to wholesale inventory without the expense and complexity of opening their own dealership.
If your goal is to build a car flipping business, there is a simpler way.
ACCESS COPART AND OTHER DEALER ONLY AUTO AUCTIONS
Vehicles available through Copart and other wholesale auto auctions require a valid dealer license. A dealer license is also required for other dealer-only auto auctions like Manheim, ADESA, IAAI, ACV, etc.
While Copart does offer a Broker Program for individuals who do not have a dealer license, broker fees and all the other costs add up quickly and reduce profits dramatically.
For anyone serious about flipping cars, affordable access to wholesale dealer-only auctions is key.
GETTING A DEALER LICENSE IS EXPENSIVE
Starting a dealership to obtain a dealer license requires significant time and expense. The typical cost to open a dealership runs from $5,000 to $25,000 up front and anywhere from 6 to 18 months depending upon the state you choose.
For people getting started with flipping cars, opening a dealership simply does not make sense.
Plus most people aren’t really looking to open and run a dealership. They simply want access to dealer-only auto auctions in order buy cars at wholesale prices. That’s exactly why we created the Dealer Agent Program over 36 years ago.

Can I flip Copart cars as a private individual without a dealer’s license?
Yes, but only in states that allow public buyers, and you are strictly limited to vehicles marked “No License Required” in that specific state. You will also be limited to selling 5 cars or less unless you have your own dealer license or are part of a Dealer Agent Program.
How do I flip "Dealer-Only" Copart cars without a dealer license?
The best opportunities when purchasing from Copart are “Dealer-Only” vehicles. If you’re serious about flipping cars, there are really only two ways to access Dealer-Only Inventory: open your own dealership or become part of a Dealer Agent Program.
Copart’s Public Bidding System works through approved Brokers, which is fine if you’re only buying an occasional vehicle. But broker fees, taxes, and registration costs can quickly eat into your profits because you’re essentially buying the vehicle as a retail consumer.
Successful car flippers understand that profits are usually made when you buy, not when you sell. That’s why many people choose the Dealer Agent Program as a practical alternative to opening and operating their own dealership.
While every state is different, all states place limits on how many vehicles an individual can buy and sell each year without a dealer license. For people serious about flipping cars for profit, having a legal cost effective way becomes essential—which is exactly why we created the Dealer Agent Program over 36 years ago.
Can I use the Copart Broker Program to "skip" the title and flip directly to the public?
No. Purchases made through a Copart Broker are completed as retail transactions, which means you are paying unnecessary broker fees, taxes, title transfers, and registration fees. Successful car flippers understand that profits are made when you purchase the vehicle, these additional expenses significantly reduce your profits.
And again, you will be limited by your state as to the number of cars you can legally sell to the public without a dealer license.
How do I avoid paying sales tax on my Copart purchases?
The only way to legally avoid paying sales tax on your Copart purchases is to have your own dealer license, or be part of a Dealer Agent Program. Dealerships are exempt from paying sales tax on cars they purchase for re-sale.
Can individuals buy from Copart without a dealer license?
Yes, but you’ll only have access to Copart’s “No License Required” vehicles. To buy the more profitable “Dealer-Only Inventory”, you will need to go through a Copart Registered Broker. That’s fine if you’re only buying an occasional car, but if you’re serious about flipping cars, those broker fees and sales taxes quickly add up which reduces your profit.
Do I have to pay sales tax on the cars I buy?
No. Licensed car dealers are exempt from paying sales tax on any vehicles they purchase for re-sale.
Do I have to pay Income Tax with your program?
Yes. At the end of the year the Co-op Dealership will give you a 1099 for your gross sales. You are required to keep track of all your expenses and your cost of goods sold. You will then need to pay income tax on the net profit from your activities. If you operate as an individual you will need to file a Schedule C with your 1040. We are able to “1099” a valid Limited Liability Company or Corporation if you wish.
How many cars can I flip per year without a dealer’s license?
The answer varies from state to state, but in most cases the number is surprisingly low—typically five or fewer vehicles per year. And remember, if you’re paying sales tax and registration fees every time you buy a car, those costs can quickly eat into your profits.
Flipping cars this way is fine in the beginning. In fact, many people flip cars this way to see if the business is right for them. When you decide that car flipping is something you want to pursue, you’ll need a more robust and sustainable way to operate. That’s why successful car flippers use those first few deals as a stepping stone and then quickly transition into a Dealer Agent Program where they can focus on honing their car flipping skills.
Can I use an out-of-state dealer license in my state?
That’s not how our Dealer Agent Program works.
You are not personally “using” or “renting” an out-of-state dealer license to sell cars in your state. The concept of “using someone else’s license” is the wrong way to think about it.
As a Dealer Agent, you become part of an established dealership that possesses a valid dealer license. That dealership—not you personally—is the legal seller of the vehicle and has the ability to buy and sell vehicles across state lines, just like thousands of dealerships do every day.
When you are part of our Dealer Agent Program you are not “borrowing” or “renting” a dealer license. Rather you are becoming part of an existing dealership that has a valid dealer license, thus allowing you to focus on sourcing inventory, marketing, and building a car flipping business without having to open and operate a brick and mortar location.
How long does it take to get set up with your Dealer Agent Program?
We get people set up in about a week.
How do I bypass state seller limits legally?
There are only two ways to move beyond your state’s private seller limits. You can open your own dealership and obtain your own dealer license, or you can become part of an established Dealer Agent Program. Those two paths are the only way of turning a hobby into a business.
What is "title skipping" or "title jumping," and is it legal?
Title skipping, sometimes called title jumping, is the practice of buying and selling a vehicle without properly transferring the title into your own name before selling it. People do this to avoid paying sales tax, income tax, title fees, and avoid state laws regarding the buying and selling vehicles for profit.
The problem is that title jumping is prohibited in every state. State DMVs take the practice very seriously because it involves tax evasion, inaccurate ownership records, and unlicensed dealer activity. Depending on the circumstances, the penalties can include substantial fines, large tax assessments, felony charges, and even the permanent loss of your ability to obtain a dealer license in the future.
In short, title jumping might save you a few dollars today, but it will cost you your business, your reputation, and potentially your freedom. Successful car flippers understand that long-term profits are built by doing things the right way—not by taking risky shortcuts.
How much insurance coverage comes with the plates?
Our program provides $100,000 liability and $30,000 of physical damage with a $2,000 or 10% deductible, which ever is greater. Physical damage covers fire, theft, comprehensive and collision. If you have questions about the amount of insurance coverage or have a special request for more insurance please feel free to call our office.
